Vegetable Gardens in Southern Europe
|
The most fascinating part of my summer trip to Europe was being able to see so many vegetable gardens everywhere. it was incredible how many I saw, every time i got on a train, bus or a car and I would constantly see vegetable gardens all around me. It all began going to the Versailles castle in Paris, when we took the metro to outside Paris the views were very nice but all of a sudden vegetable gardens started to appear. on the sides of the railroad tracks, everywhere. This was guerrilla gardening in action. I had read about I had seen pictures of it on the web and I had dreamed of it. but finally being able to see consumers become producers and retake lost land as it is on the sides of the railroad was just pure romance. Land that would normally be growing grass that would have had to cut was now producing food for someone. After that on our bus ride to the airport outside of Paris there were huge community gardens divided in smaller gardens were it was clear that many people worked on them. In Italy i was able to ride many trains from town to town in the slower train. Giving me the opportunity to appreciate all the big grape farms. But also many smaller vegetable gardens. Were you could see growing all kinds of vegetables. From tomatoes to beans to eggplants to peppers, onions, garlic, lettuces all kinds. In Portugal was the most incredible vegetable gardens. In the city of Lisboa in abandoned lots you could see the beauty of city guerrilla farming. Huge vegetable gardens. Even on the side of the highway on the cliffs formed when you build a bridge you could see terraces like ancient civilizations would build to grow there food but in the middle of the city. From the sides of railroad tracks to the sides of highways. Every country I went i saw vegetable gardens in every imaginable part. So what does that mean to me? Even if the food prices of Europe aren’t so high all these people still grow some of their food. People still appreciate the empowering that gardening gives you. People still appreciate the small wonder of life. Gardening |

Very cool. Been a while since I was in Europe. I'll have to look for this next time.
