Animal Orphans

While we were in Nairobi, we spent the day going to an Elephant and Giraffe Orphanage.  At the David Sheldrick wildlife trust we saw 11 baby elephants having lunch and got to pat them as they strolled around, played with a soccer ball and splashed themselves in the red dirt water.  There we also saw and pet a baby black rhino who was also orphaned.  It was pretty cool.  It was behind a big metal gate, but then the keepers let it out and all that stood between us was a tiny metal coil string, like the kind that you would see at an amusement park or something to make sure people line up properly!

That afternoon was definitely a highlight for me.  We headed over to the Giraffe Centre, where we learnt about the giraffes and got to feed them pellets from a raised platform.  If you stuck the pellets between your lips they would come and lick them out!  It was hilarious.  And, not to worry, it was sanitary because their saliva is antiseptic from the acacia trees they eat...crazy...Ryan kissed a lot of giraffes that afternoon...and I kissed one too!  Giraffes are becoming a favorite of mine...so beautiful!

After saying goodbye to some of the great friends we had made (we miss you Elise and Alanna!) we headed of to Lake Nakuru.  We had our first rain of the trip that night...unlucky that it got inside our tent!  We had a wicked game drive there and saw tons of rhinos, monkeys (a vervet one even pissed on a girl from our tour!), giraffes, baboons, and MILLIONS of birds.   In fact, this was home to about 1.5 million flamingos and probably more pelicans.  it was a sight to remember for sure.  Got some stunning photos.  Definitely recommend this game drive to anyone coming to Kenya.

Sept 30 marked three months of travel for Ryan and I.  It has absolutely flown by and we are loving ever minute of it!
