Providencia - Colombia´s Idyllic Caribbean Pirate Island
|
Caribbean idyll in Colombia - please check out my piece for CNN Traveller on Providencia I feel a bit slack of late not having written a real blog but things have not settled down one bit in the past few months. I am working tooth and nail to update a travel guide and co-author another one to Colombia, the purchase of my colonial house in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mompos (Garcia Marquez heartland) has finally gone through and I am heading there in the next day or two with some electrical supplies to start the renovations and get the place up and running as a traveller guesthouse. Now, do or or don´t I accept a 6 week gig with my old company to lead an expedition through Bolivia and Peru from April? Is there time for everything? I certainly hope so! It would mean getting back into the thick of things, leading a group of up to ten 18 year old brits through thick and thin, camping trips, the Inca Trail, whitewater rafting...hell, what am I thinking, I should tell them right away that I am a sure thing and plead insanity and beg forgiveness from my girlfriend later...

Ricardo, I clicked on the link to read the article, but it says "Sorry, no posts matched your criteria." I would love to read it because I am headed out to San Andres in a few weeks and I would love to get to Providencia. Saludos!
Dengue is the worst-- Francisco and I had it at the same time and we were the most pathetic creatures on the earth. When you're not battling bugs, I hope you'll be writing about all of these ventures and adventures! I definitely look forward to it. I passed on the Macondo BBC article to a Spanish professor friend of mine (he's Colombian), and he enjoyed it quite a bit.
Peace,
Julie
you get the sweetest gigs, Richard! Congrats on the new house.
Fascinating piece...I didn't realize that CNN had a traveler's section. Loved the comment about Henry Morgan from the fisherman--Morgan was just as much a statesman as he was a pirate, shifting his allegiances and tactics with the politics of the day (much like former U.S. President Andrew Jackson). Perhaps that's why Morgan lived to die of natural causes.
The expedition sounds awesome...I wish I was along with the group. Don't worry too much about the blogging--international electrical installation issues always take precedent. I won't get insulted--unless you forgo us for drywalling. ;)

Do it.
And congratulations on securing the house... can't wait to hear more about how it comes to life as a guesthouse.
Peace,
Julie

Cheers Julie, I am confirming my acceptance of the Expedition job for April. When everything comes down to it, it has been a couple of years since I was last in those countries, I love hiking and camping and well, I need the cash! The only thing that held me back was the very reason I had to quit in the first place, double doses of Malaria and Dengue, twice!
Renovating a colonial house bleeds one dry. The grand irony is that nobody wanted the house, it was falling into disrepair and now that I have it and need to do work on it, everything has to be overseen by the representatives of the Ministry of Culture!
