Melting sea ice opens valuable Arctic route See, global warming won't kill us...we just be moving our business north. My recommendation? Purchase acreage in the Yukon territory while its still cheap. ;)

Just what we need - oil tankers, (more) cruise ships, and other commercial shipping passing through the high arctic on a regular basis. Start the countdown to the first major spill...
Not to mention the fact that Russia, Canada, the US and Denmark are already gearing up for a fight over who gets to drill for oil first.
This is seriously bad news for the North.
I was shocked to hear Canada taking an uncharacteristically "military" approach to the issue. Seems unusual for them, but then again I guess the money for that socialist healthcare system has to come from somewhere. :)

Hah. Yeah, it's a touchy issue up here - people are very attached to the idea of us as a northern nation, and we get very emotional about it. One of the few things (besides hockey) that gets us riled up and violently patriotic I guess. People were howling for Danish blood when they planted a flag on a 3-km piece of rock a year or two ago. (War between Canada and Denmark = Funniest thing ever?)
I guess I should add some links to my earlier rant...
Here's an indepth background to the whole North West Passage issue and Canada's ongoing military buildup in the area: http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/cdnmilitary/arctic.html
And here's my recent World Hum post on the issue (yeah, shameless I know):

Seems like there's always a way to make money from natural disasters, isn't there?!
