It's story-sharing time!

Today at World Hum I posed the question, "What's Your Travel Dealbreaker?" Or, to be more specific, "Is there something a friend or family member could do, say, or express a preference for, that would put them on your travel-buddy blacklist for life? What’s your travel dealbreaker?" The post came about thanks to a few hilarious stories I've come across about the outrageous things people say and do - those magic moments when you hear a comment and say to yourself, wow, we're done here. Anyway, I'm hoping to get a good juicy anecdote-filled comment string going, so please take a moment to check it out and see if you have a story of your own you'd like to share! Thanks so much! http://www.worldhum.com/weblog/item/whats_your_travel_dealbreaker_20071217/ |

Thanks for chiming in, guys!
Anne - LOVE that story. In a "that's awful" kind of way.
Nickahlm - I definitely feel you on all three...
great concept. left a comment at World Hum...
(you know this story, but I gotta share it!)
I was in a restaurant in Pnom Penh, Cambodia, with a group of people, and the friendly waiter was trying to impress us with the English he knew. He was very kind and not at all pushy, so when he joked about hoping to get a big tip, I didn't take any offense. But one girl, on a backpacking gap year between her BA and grad school, piped up with "we'd tip you, but we're students. In Canada, we're like, the poorest people." As though Canadian backpackers with a few student loans had the same plight as the shoeless waiter in the third-world country.
I've been lucky with travelmates, but she was awful!
This is tough... cause there are a few things...
1) someone who whines a lot. Everyone gets tired, everyone gets cracky, everyone gets frustrated... the last thing I need is to listen to someone complain even though everyone is feeling the same way!
2) someone unwilling to compromise. When traveling, you have to accept that your not gonna be able to see EVERYTHING you want... and when traveling with someone who has this idea in their head that they should have it all their way, is way too frustrating. Your have to be willing to see some of what you want, and miss parts of others. Keeping an open mind is key.
3) someone who only wants to go to bars/clubs and get drunk. Call me a geek, or a dork... but I wanna see the history, the cathedrals, the ruins, the museums (when abroad anyways). If someone only wants to get wasted and sleep all day, we wont have a good experience.
Thats probably the "Big 3" for me... hopefully some of you feel my pain.
