Testimony on teaching project from volunteer Matthew Day:-

I arrived at Yantai mid-February. It was absolutely freezing but the School is surrounded by spectacular scenery, with mountains at the back and the rest of the city below it. Most mornings, I would walk up the mountains at the back of the school and watch the groups of Chinese people do their morning exercises; Tai Chi and Gong Fu mainly. Between teaching the classes, I would sometimes join in with the P.E. classes with Mr Wang who looked after any problems I had. He also taught me how to shoot hoops properly!!!
The teaching itself was great fun- I was teaching 20 hours a week which, to start with, was very tiring but extremely rewarding at the same time. In the classes, we covered a whole range of topics at the same time as trying to get the students speaking more conversational English. It was great to see the students improve in their confidence in English speaking through the time I spent at the school.
Yantai is a beautiful city and there is so much to do. The beaches are just a stroll from the centre, various markets scattered all over and there is a good ex-pat community also. Furthermore, if you need a break from the Chinese cuisine, there are quite a few western restaurants in the city also- although the food in Yantai, especially the seafood was so delicious I never got tired of it!!!
I will never forget my experience in Yantai- it helped me experience the country in a way just travelling around the country could never do, and I will definitely be returning to Yantai when I next travel to China.
