Operates In: San Pedro Columbia, Toledo District, BELIZE, Central America
Our Mission: Maya Mountain Research Farm is a registered Non Governmental Organization located in the foothills of the southern flank of the Maya Mountains. This area is biologically rich, with many species of plants and animals. To the north of MMRF lie the heart of the Maya Mountains, and hundreds of thousands of acres of rainforest. To the south is the Columbia Branch of the Rio Grande, which issues forth from a spring a short distance from the property. Across the river is the Kek'chi Maya Columbia Reservation.
MMRF was formed to address the intersection between agriculture and the environment, to run trials on species and techniques that have potential value to small holders in the lowland humid tropical environment of southern Belize and its neighboring countries. MMRF is a working farm and provides demonstrations of agroforestry and permaculture principles, with an understanding of the value of biological diversity.
What We Do: MMRF works with local farmers, students from with in Belize and from abroad, other Non Governmental Organizations and the Government of Belize to provide a venue for training. We have several courses every year in agroforestry, permaculture, and many smaller trainings. The farm is a working farm. We use interns and volunteers to help run the farm.
The farm also runs off of renewable energy systems, and provides training in renewable energy.
