Our Mission: Expose the human crisis of slums in Sri Lanka by penetrating the mainstream media and the dominant social ideology with counter hegemonic discourses of the oppressed by means of an interventionist mediological approach and promote justice and equity by empowering suppressed communities with knowledge, as such that they shall regain their deprived independence and self-determination.
League of Slum Dwellers (L.S.D) is a meeting point in physical space for the exchange of alternative and independent information, for the sole purpose of empowering suppressed communities within the Colombo District, as 63% of its population live in slums and ghettoes amidst unbearable living conditions. Further more they dwell in 9% of land in Colombo while the rest of the 37% of the population occupy massive 91% of land from the District. L.S.D aims to be an embodiment of democracy by encouraging community involvement through and for the re-appropriation of information and integration of the circular form of communication by replacing the current mainstream mediological practice of linear flow, in which reader has no space to convey his/her opinion.
What We Do: We understand that the existing mainstream media institutions are politically polarized and commercially oriented and thus, the idea of building a platform to expose the ground level issues of the oppressed is excluded from their agendas as ground level issues carry diminutive commercial value. L.S.D believes that the purpose of media should be to provide information to be free and self-governing as the free flow of information of a country is the critical decider of the practice of its democracy. Therefore we aim to formulate our work according to the above mentioned ideology.
