Our Mission:
To create and implement "Green, Sustainable Communities" integrated within natural ecosystems, able to establish a dynamic of alternative and integral development, converting them into an instrument of concientiousness, that brings forth a change at a national and regional level of the present vision in themes such as: environmental conservation, health, nutrition, education, security, sustainability, gender equality, etc, influencing a change in the logistics of a more just, more equal and more humane development, implicating an authentic spiritual, cultural, economic, polítical and social renovation, allowing the survival of every species on the planet including humanity.

What We Do:
We are a group of people that believe in the planet as a living bieng and the great home of all beings. We have organized ourselves with the intention to create an alternative form of development able to sustain human envolvment beginning from the principles of equality, without exploiting people or places, or future natural resources for the benefit of the present.

We work closely within rural communities that are located near protected areas. As of right now, our main focus is a community named El Balsamar. El Balsamar is a tiny community consisting of 157 families spread out amongst vast beautiful coffee plantations and Balsam forests. A place special for its forests rich in biodiversity, abundance of water, production of Balsam and its beautiful hardworking people. While rich in natural resources the community lives without electricity and potable water. The roads are unpaved and more than 67 of the families have no latrines. 90% of the families that have latrines, have them dangerously close to a water source. The families wash, bathe and drink directly from the river.

We have been working in El Balsamar for a little over a year now. Some of our accomplishments include: The creation of an active and hardworking environmental committee made up of 17 members of the community, a plastic and aluminum recycling project, 7 cleanup campaigns with community wide participation, trainings on trash separation, protected areas and other environmental issues, solicitude of projects such as : 15 wood saving stoves and are in the process of soliciting 30 composting latrines for the community with the help of a peace corps volunteer and member of GAIA in the community.

We also work closely with the children of the community, giving talks in the school on biodiversity and other environmental issues, a small worm farming project and organic garden.
We are planning a party for the children of El Balsamar for the 30th of September (Dia del Niño - Day of the child) which will include dramas for children in themes of environmental education and gender equity, refreshments and storytelling.

The recently formed environmental committee of El Balsamar has decided to start their first project with composting latrines. A composting latrine is a great alternative for El Balsamar because of the abundance in natural water sources. A composting latrine can be built anywhere without contaminating the water or the environment. The committee has worked hard to choose 30 families with the greatest necessity, who will provide manual labor, tools and transportation, who will support and participate in environmental committee activities, and who will attend a training workshop designed by the environmental committee on composting latrines and how to care for them.
