Our Mission: El Nahual is an educational community center funded by its non-profit Spanish school for foreigners. Located in the western highland city of Quetzaltenango, El Nahual provides free educational programs to some of the poorest communities in the area.
Conscious of the many social problems that face the people of Guatemala, we started a school that would use all its profits to give back to the community. The Spanish school is composed of a team of professional teachers with years of experience in teaching Spanish to foreign students.
“El Nahual” is a Mayan term that means “protective spirit” of each person. Our vision is to become a guiding force for those who need us. We strive to encourage personal growth and human rights awareness by providing access to education.
Our philosophy is "educando para desarrollo social," or "educating for social development." We invite you to partake in our mission.
What We Do: El Nahual supports free educational programs for children called "Manos de Colores." At 4 different locations including schools and after-school programs, El Nahual provides English and art classes to broaden students' curriculums and learning experiences, most of which only include math and Spanish instruction. At the El Nahual community center, children receive reinforcement classes in both math and Spanish. While the program serves as an after-school program for many children, others that do not go to school depend on the program as their only source of education. El Nahual also runs an adult school on Saturdays for people 14 years and older to complete their primary school certificate in 2 years. Many parents are enrolled in the program that wish to become literate or simply help their own children with their homework.
