Education (Teaching English, Maths and Science Opportunities)

DAVS currently has volunteer teaching opportunities throughout the Volta Region of Ghana. The teaching positions are available in Primary and Secondary schools, however we can arrange if you want to teach in a pre-school if that is your preference. Volunteers will have opportunity to make a lasting difference in Ghanaian communities through education whiles experiencing Ghana culture and traditions.
This program is designed to give university students or professionals the opportunity to develop their teaching skills in a structured setting. The student-teacher will have a teacher mentor and supervisor at the school where they are working. Student-teachers are also given an extra five day orientation specific to teaching in the Ghanaian school system.
Working as a teacher’s assistant in a pre-school, primary, secondary, and the university ,helping to teach English, Maths ,Science and other subjects. Also helping to organize activities from arts and crafts, to music, dance and sports lessons.
Volunteers are expected to provide practical lessons to students. Also, by working with local teachers you are providing new and innovative ways to teach the English language that they can use with future students for many years, thereby making a long-lasting impact that benefits the entire community.
Program Dates and Requirement:
Must be a Native English Speaker, Must be at least a high school student or hold a high school diploma. Must be between 18-50yrs.
Program Schedule:
January to March, April to July and September to December each year.

Orphanage/Childcare Volunteering
‘Touching A Life’

DAVS works with orphanages and child welfare organizations throughout the regions that we operate. The children come from a variety of situations including loss of one or both parents, physical and sexual abuse, extreme poverty, and more suffering than many of us can imagine. Volunteers at this placement lead activities with the children including games, informal education, arts and crafts, reading activities, music and more.
The main responsibility of a volunteer is to spend time with the children, and give them the love they need.
Its hard to imagine a volunteer experience more fulfilling than working at an orphanage in Ghana. The program is opened from January to November each year. No skill is needed for this program, but interested volunteers must have love for kids and be able to provide maximum attention to the children.

Computer Literacy Project
‘Share your I.T Skills With the African Child’
Do you want to bring technology to the door-step of the African child? Teach the kids to use the internet,creat e-mails, find pen pals, play games etc.Contribute your quota to technological development in Ghana.
Interested volunteers must have knowledge or have background in computers. Computer training ranges from hard
and software basics, Office programs and Internet use. We encourage international volunteers and schools to motivate students to use computers on their free time and to give them more vital time to practice! Volunteers may demonstrate applications and help children to explore by themselves, to find out, to learn by themselves! Self-paced learning, just like you learnt!

Health/HIV/AIDS AWARENESS OUTREACH PROGRAM
We have an outstanding health programs for professionals and students who want to gain practical experience in their chosen field of career. Volunteers will provide basic healthcare for rural people, decrease the prevalence of endemic disease and improve overall village health by providing public health projects and promoting health education in the villages. Volunteers will be placed in hospitals, clinics, commmunity health centre to assist doctors, nurses and other staff health workers. Volunteer's role can range from observational to basic assistance, depending on your level of knowledge.
Basic access to medical services in developing communities is often limited, volunteers are needed to provide basic services such as diabetes screenings, tooth extractions, well-baby checks and pre-natal exams in local clinics, community dispensaries, and in homes through outreach programs. Dentists, nurses, physicians and medical students are also needed to perform physical check-ups, test eyesight, examine newborns, and perform outpatient surgeries. While the needs and the working conditions are very basic, your contribution can make a difference. Our host communities often lack modern medical facilities.
The Program is opened throughout the year. There is no specific dates for application. An important element of these placements is learning about healthcare practices in different cultures and being able to educate people.
Medical professionals, Pre-medical students are required for this program.

Women Empowerment Program‘Enhancing the livelihood of Women’
Indicators of women's empowerment were developed to evaluate program impact on women's self-confidence and vision of the future, their status and bargaining power within the household, and their status and networks in the community .
The program is aimed at improving the quality of life of women in the Volta Region. Whether you are interested in small business development, health care, HIV/AIDS education and support, legal issues, there is a suitable placement for you.
We have realized that the poverty level
Ghana is very high especially with the women in poor communities. This is because of the high rate of school drop out, teenage pregnancy ,and the believe that most women need only to live as house-wives. Also the lack of finance which prevent girls from going to school contribute to this factor. It is on this note that DAVS has established this project to assist women have a skill/trade, and to be self empowered in order to reduce poverty and improve their livelihood. Social workers and anybody with a skill/trade to share, income generating ideas or counseling is welcomed

Construction and Renovation Projects(SUMMER CAMP)
Most volunteers see this Work Camp as an adventure. There is lots of fun working with local people on a renovation, building,Projects such as schools, library, clinics, market places, health centres, youth centres and many more. Participating in this project is Challenging, you need a lot of energy to pound a nail, carry mortar, swinging paint brushes, painting a building and plastering, planting a flower and fetching water for mortar mixing. You can also help clear park land, plant community gardens, dig wells for water projects for clean water systems, and also install play ground equipment.
No specific construction skills are needed, but volunteers with knowledge in building plans, and architects are needed. Also volunteers.Must be in good health condition, and the ability to do hardwork. This program is opened from January to April and July to November each year. Energetic drumming and dancing is very popular in villages, learn to dance and play
