Our Mission:
The mission of the Amazon Conservation Association is to conserve the biological diversity of the Amazon Basin.

What We Do:
ACA has brought together an experienced staff of tropical ecologists and conservationists using cutting-edge science and innovative tools to protect the southwestern Amazon in Peru and Bolivia. We are working with all sectors of society to find solutions. We are creating models for others to follow - ACA created the world’s first conservation concession, manages some of the best research stations in South America, and is leading the charge to find ways for the voluntary carbon market to help make forest conservation financially sustainable.

ACA programs are implemented through our Peruvian sister organization, Asociación para la Conservación de la Cuenca Amazónica (ACCA), headquartered in Cuzco, and ACA-Bolivia, headquartered in La Paz, as well as with other local organizations and community groups.

Fate of world's rainforests likely to be determined in next 2 years mongabay.com June 19, 2009 The fate of millions of hectares of tropical forests will probably be sealed this year and next year, reports a new set of policy papers detailing an emerging climate change mitigation mechanism known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD). REDD has been proposed by the U.N. and other entities as a form of carbon finance under which industrialized nations would pay tropical countries for conserving their forest cover. Deforestation and forest degradation currently account for roughly one fifth of carbon emissions, more than all the planet's cars, trucks, planes, ships, and trains combined.

Amazon deforestation doesn't make communities richer, better educated, or healthier Rhett A. Butler, mongabay.com June 11, 2009 A new study finds Amazon deforestation fails to sustain long-term economic growth for rural populations. The findings come as development interests in Brazil push for government support to bolster infrastructure projects and agricultural expansion in the world's largest rainforest.

Put your money where it counts. DONATE TO THE AMAZON CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION’S END OF YEAR CAMPAIGN! Help protect critical habitat in the Peruvian Amazon. The Amazon rainforest is home to nearly 1/3 of the plant and animal species on earth, many of them found nowhere else. The Amazon Conservation Association protects this treasure-trove of biodiversity using innovative legal conservation tools, sustainable forest products, and community participation in the Amazon headwaters region, where Amazon rivers flow from the Andes mountains into the rainforest. These rivers hold 20% of the freshwater on the planet.
