Earth Day 2008 is coming up soon--April 22.

Where will you be? And how will you observe / celebrate / recognize the earth on this day?

First camping trip of spring in Vermont sounds about right. Up at the pond, peeper frogs.

Cleaning up the riparian areas along the creek in my neighborhood here in Northern Idaho.

Hmm, I'll either be here in Barbados or another island nearby - St. Vincent or St. Lucia, maybe. I just realized when you posted this that I don't think I've acknowledged Earth Day since I finished public school, we always did something in class. Shocking.

Back in junior high we would go out as a class to pick up bottles from the roadside ...and stash them for later to break over a bridge.

sigh.

There are some very cool events going on all over the world. Some places are celebrating the entire month of April. Stay tuned ;)

Being a forester's daughter I like to combine Arbor Day and Earth Day with tree planting activities. Considering I still have lots of snow on the ground it may be delayed a bit this year.

In Białowieża, moving toads and the occasional grass frog from one side of the road to the other.

Right on, Lauren, it's all about the frogs. I love hearing the spring peepers in Vermont this time of year.

Hmmm...good looking out. I'm unfortunately with Eva; haven't even noticed Earth Day since school. I'll make sure to take my two little billy sisters up to the top of Mt. Tam in Marin and watch the sunset, to appreciate how lucky we are to live near protected areas like that. I also really like the idea of planting some trees..might have to get down on some of that, too :)

On my calendar..

Ross..I have wonderful memories of hiking Mt. Tam. Enjoy!

Planting trees is a wonderful way to celebrate both Earth Day and Arbor Day (April 22nd and 25th, respectively). The Arbor Day Foundation (http://www.arborday.org) can set you up on everything you need. There is also the Billion Trees Campaign, sponsored by the UN and 2004 Nobel Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai of Kenya(http://www.unep.org/BILLIONTREECAMPAIGN). Almost 2 billion have been planted since 2007. It's easy to do and one of the best presents you can give Mother Earth, on her day or any other.

So I have a challenge for the Matador community. Plant a tree, somewhere, tell us the species, the place. Make it a tribute to a loved one, living or transitioned ( I plant one in honor of my wonderful, literate mother, who I owe so much to.)

Arboreal game on folks!
