Hahaha, yeah, this is big news up here. China's on the "safer" list, too.
I'm not sure which is more bizarre - the warnings about terror attacks (??), or the warnings about rampant pickpocketry on public transit. No one I know has ever been pickpocketed or otherwise passively robbed in Canada - the very occasional mugging and the (slightly more frequent) break-and-enter notwithstanding.
Some Canadian journalist pointed out that Canada's and Australia's crime rates are virtually identical. The Australian government had no comment.
I have lived in Canada all my life and my visiting friends have never been pickpocketed. They have always felt safe here. There is more danger of credit card fraud or bank card fraud than of tourists being pickpocketed. You'd have to be really careless or really obvious as a tourist with money. I even worked as a tour guide in Old MOntreal at one point, and no one ever told me such stories.

The Aussie have finally received my warnings about the Maple Leaf. Being a hotbed of terrorist attacks and ice tornadoes, this Satan-den has been finally been classified as "less safe" than places such places as Chile, Romania and South Korea.
