A couple years ago I drove through Central America. I did not stop in El Salvador. It is a pretty small country and I am not aware of many things to do there. I only spent a few nights in Guatemala, but from what I here there is more to do and it is more inviting for foreigners. Like I said, I don't have a ton of experience in either two countries, but I have always wanted to go to Tikal. As far as traveling alone, it would be better to find a travel companion. I don't think the trip is that far from San Salvador to the border and if you travel during the day you should be alright, but it would be better to travel with another person. Happy travels!

I´m going to be in El Salvador for less than 2 weeks (a stopover on my way home to San Fran). I haven´t heard much from other travelers about El Salvador so I´m wondering if I should explore or head across the border to Guatemala and check out a few places, considering its such a short trip. I´m also a bit concerned about traveling alone as a woman across the border, etc. Any suggestions?
