There are several decent hostels around plaza Dorrego in San Telmo. One of the best ones is Hostel Nomade. http://www.hostelnomade.com/
Shared rooms are 20 pesos a night, private rooms 50 pesos (remember its about 3.12 pesos per dollar), and it's clean / good to go.
20 pesos a night, not bad at all. And privates for 50! Man, Patagonia is pricey.
Thanks David.

Hey Tim, yup, prices down there are expensive! As for BA...last time I was there, end of 2006 I rented a small studio in Palermo for about $100 a week...not overly cheap but I had had enough of two years in hostels with snoring folk and was craving a little privacy. I did that though http://www.bytargentina.com/
Otherwise in San Telmo I usually stay at the Telmo Tango Suite

again it has been a year or so since I was there so I cannot vouch for it. But I liked it back in the day
take it easy

Richard, thanks so much! Great info. I think I have a place to stay with a friend in Las Canitas, but just in case I get drunk and rude and she kicks me onto the street I'll be sure to keep the short-term rental in mind.

I have been here 8 years and I rent rooms to people coming in. I have a luxury apartment right on Av de Mayo between the Pink House and Tortoni. I'm full up right now but I may have a room mid to late February. Regarding prices, don't trust experience more than 6 months old. Prices go up here every 3 to 6 months. We have a bit of an inflation problem right now. I charge less than most hostels and the rooms are uge and private (elevator / security building. Let me know.
I am headed to BA Agrentina in May. I am trying to learn as much as possible before I go. I am looking for a small job at a bar or hostel and a place to stay. Do you have any advice for a traveler?
Yo, Timmy...
Apologies if this is too late...but I am staying at a nice hostel a little farther out in San Telmo, but not a bad walk to city center, etc.
It is super chill, not rowdy at all. Owners are dope.
All the guests are really cool...
Lots of terraces, patios, and a kitchen.

My buddies are looking for a good place to crash in BA, and I realized that I don't have a clue where to send them. Anyone have ideas? Palermo and San Telmo seem to be the two hottest neighborhoods...
