You know, this would just make a great section. "Dive bars in..." and have people chime in with their best.
Of course, the definition of "dive" varies greatly.
Some day, I'm going to find myself on that mystical West Coast--when that day comes, you can be damn sure that I'm going to be referencing this.

I'm a dive bar junkie. And SF is a great place to live if you like dives. I'd like to start a running list of dive bar rec's in SF. I'll start with three of my favorites...
Doc's Clock @ Mission and 22nd -- WHY? -- Cheap drinks, shuffle puck and proximity to a bunch of other Mission bars.
Dogpatch Saloon @ 2496 3rd St, out past the ballpark -- WHY? -- Great Live Jazz on Sunday afternoons.
Club Delux on Haight St -- WHY? -- Lots of live music, cool old school decor and cold, cheap beers
