Group volunteers have to arrive here in Ghana approximately one week ahead of the project, depending on their flight information. Volunteers can also arrive during the project. Project focus Building/Construction of the ICT Centre Providing/ Delivery of Computer Infrastructure for the Centers. Rationale for the project Unlike some countries in the South where ICT is a well-established development activity with numerous sources of equipment and programmes for learning, it is only a recent phenomenon in Ghana and is still virtually restricted to its urban areas. Ghana's ICT knowledge and use in relation to the population is only about 8%. Computerization of government offices has just begun and this could be seen in the major capital towns- Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi. Very few schools could boast of a few computers, mostly donated. Internet and e-mail services are found in local communication centers and Internet cafes, though very expensive. A number of private computer training centers/schools operate in the big cities and offer training in computer skills at cut throat prices to people. Therefore DIVOG would like to involve both local and international volunteers to bring Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to the people of the communities considered deprived in the Volta Region in order to help bridge the digital divide. During the Camp Ghana 2005, the volunteers would help in the Construction of the ICT Centre. The work would involve, Mixing concrete, cracking of stone, laying of bricks, building roofs, painting, among other things, therefore, DIVOG is requesting financial and material support from all concerned to help in this project. There will be games of all kinds, group tours and workshops for the community members which would also involve the volunteers. Curriculum development DIVOG together with the volunteers would develop the curriculum that will go with the use of the Center. Volunteers would help in preparing materials that will be prepared in the following applications: Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Desktop Publishing, Internet Orientation and Web page designing. DIVOG proposes to make these materials uniform in the Center under the project, though amendments will be made to suit local conditions when necessary. |
